A continuous glucose monitor is a small sensor worn on the arm or abdomen with a tiny filament under the skin, measuring glucose every one to five minutes and streaming it to your phone. Instead of the isolated snapshots of fingersticks, you get the whole movie: the level, the direction, the speed, and the history. Dexcom, Libre, and Eversense are the main players.
One technical honesty note: CGMs measure interstitial fluid, not blood, which lags blood glucose by several minutes. When you are dropping fast, blood is a bit lower than the sensor says; rising fast, a bit higher. The trend arrow matters as much as the number — 120 falling fast and 120 steady are different situations.
What a CGM changes day to day:
- Foods reveal their true shapes — the pizza late rise, the cereal spike, the flat Greek yogurt line.
- Lows announce themselves early, including overnight, instead of arriving as surprises.
- Metrics like Time in Range become visible and trackable instead of abstract.
- Patterns emerge across days: the same breakfast behaving the same way, dawn phenomenon showing up on schedule.
The flip side is data overload — a number every five minutes can feed anxiety and the urge to react to every wiggle. Most people settle into checking curves and patterns rather than staring at the line, and alarm thresholds worth actually waking up for are a good care-team conversation.
